Jeff was born and raised in the small, blue-collar town of Kelso, Washington. A Vietnam veteran, Jeff served on the nuclear attack submarine USS Barb, where he earned the highest rating possible during his term, E5. After four years of service, Jeff used his G.I. Bill benefit to become the first in his family to earn a Bachelor’s Degree. It was during his time at Western Washington University that Jeff first pursued his interest in teaching, and he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Jeff’s career began at Parkrose School District, where he taught Industrial Arts for five years before taking a technical writing job at Tektronix. In the 21 years that followed, Jeff gained first-hand knowledge of technology and business as he advanced to corporate communications manager. For 10 of those years, Jeff satisfied his passion for education and public service by serving on the David Douglas School Board. He went on to spend another 10 years at David Douglas, this time in the classroom, where he taught marketing and shop to high school students. He retired from the classroom after the 2012 school year and ran for State Representative to continue to serve his community.
Jeff lives in East Portland with his wife, Annette Mattson. They have four daughters and are proud they’ve all graduated from Oregon universities. When he’s not in Salem or learning more about the needs of East Portland and Happy Valley, Jeff enjoys biking, gardening, and woodworking.
