Jeff Reardon on the Issues
The state of Oregon’s economy is troubling, and we need legislators with real world experience and the ideas to get us moving again. Having taught students valuable technical skills for the last 10 years, Jeff Reardon knows that 21st century job skills lead to good paying jobs, even in these tough times. With 21 years experience at the local company Tektronix, Jeff also knows the issues facing Oregon companies today. And, in addition to his teaching career, Jeff’s 10 years on the David Douglas School Board will allow him to be the voice of experience when it comes to school improvement.
But Jeff has more than just experience. He has a vision for House District 48 — a vision which would strengthen our schools, create jobs for our graduates and those looking for work, and ensure that our economy is grounded in the industries of the 21st century.
The key to creating and maintaining good paying jobs is to ensure that our workforce is trained for the jobs this community needs. Once elected, Jeff will foster partnerships between high schools, community colleges, and local businesses so that our students are learning the proper skills.
Additionally, Jeff will work to draw industry to this community in an effort to boost the economy and provide more job opportunities.
With 10 years of school board experience and 15 more in the classroom – plus four daughters, all graduated from Oregon universities – Jeff Reardon knows education from every angle, and it’s one of his top priorities.
Jeff knows that education starts early, and supports early education to make sure our children are prepared to learn. Jeff also knows that classroom sizes are too big, and educational budgets too small.
Jeff knows we must work hard to stabilize the funding system for education so that our children do not slip through the cracks when tough times hit. That includes maintaining a rainy day fund to protect against decreased tax revenues and ending tax kickers that drain educational coffers.
And, knowing the importance of technical education for today’s young workers, Jeff supports local community colleges to train our students for viable careers.
As a proud Vietnam veteran who served on a nuclear submarine, Jeff will fight for fellow soldiers struggling today.
Our veterans’ dedicated service cannot go unrecognized. Jeff will work hard to increase access to services for veterans, including increasing efficiency at the VA, bolstering the housing and job assistance programs, and addressing the drug addiction and mental health issues facing many veterans.
Jeff understands that while our land can provide us with many valuable resources, we must be strong stewards of our land to continue to reap benefits. Oregon’s majestic beauty is something worth preserving.
Jeff has been backed by several environmental groups, including the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, for his commitment to sustainably developing Oregon’s resources. He will stand up against those seeking to destroy our rich environment, while also recognizing the economic benefit we can derive from it.
Not only has Jeff been endorsed by several unions in the area, including the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, SEIU Local 503, Oregon Education Association, Oregon AFL-CIO and Oregon AFSCME, he’s been a member of four different unions throughout his life.
Additionally, as a career technical and industrial arts teacher, Jeff prepared students for careers in construction trades. He knows the importance of unions in providing a large portion of our community with working-wage jobs that come with the benefits necessary to running a prosperous household.
But as a former member of the David Douglas School board, Jeff has been on both sides of the bargaining table. This varied experience has served to reinforce for him a basic belief: working people need strong representation, and the right to form unions without intimidation or coercion from their employers.
In the legislature, Jeff will be a champion for the rights of these workers, and his support for collective bargaining will never waver.
Despite recent national attacks on women’s rights, Jeff’s stance on these issues has always been firm. With four daughters, Jeff is sensitive to women’s rights and will always vote to keep them intact.
Jeff supports programs which combat domestic violence and provide resources to victims and their children. He supports equal wages and fair treatment in the workplace. And Jeff will never vote to restrict a woman’s right to choose.
